Wendy Red Star was raised on the Apsáalooke reservation in Montana and her work is informed both by her cultural heritage and her engagement with many forms of creative expression, including photography, sculpture, video, fiber arts, and performance.

Although Red Star works with a variety of mediums, her photography is most striking as she combines stereotypical and authentic images of Native Americans, making references to the past and modern day. Many are self-portraits and they often feature a re-interpretation of clichéd representations of Native Americanscolonialism, the environment, and her own family. [Source]

Her work  can be characterized as witty, inquisitive and unsettling as she incorporates humour and colourful surrealism into her pieces. Foundational to Red Star's artistic approach is intergenerational collaborative work, along with creating a forum for the expression of Native women’s voices in contemporary art. [Source]
